Tickets
“Let them leave together
Under one condition
Orpheus, the undersigned
Shall not turn to look behind”
- His Kiss, the Riot, Hadestown1)
There’s only one way out of the Underworld - a Ticket. Hades isn’t exactly known for his generosity, and until Orpheus and Eurydice asked to leave, some didn’t even believe these tickets existed.
Most Tickets come with conditions, though there are some extremely rare tickets that don’t have any. A chance to leave the Underworld is a valuable thing indeed, and there are plenty of people out there who would trade you just about anything for the chance.
Deals
“What she was instead, was dead
Dead to the world, anyway
You see, she went behind those doors
And signed her life away”
- Way down Hadestown (Reprise), Hadestown2)
The Underworld is a cut-throat place, but there are some things that are bound more tightly to your soul. There are deals, and there are Deals, and Mr. Hades is especially fond of the latter. Round these parts, those that are foolish enough might make such a deal, a binding contract on your soul.
When you bargained for your ticket out of here, it was bound to you, and you alone. It can’t be stolen from you, or lost, this is a contract. However, should you wish, you may make another deal to pass your ticket on. But a ticket is the only way out of here, and giving away yours almost certainly means you’re not getting a second chance of freedom.
If you wish to make a deal, you'll need to get the paperwork filled in and signed, and for that you'll need to speak to one of the Fates. They're the ones with the forms, and anywhere where Shades gather there's usually a Fate to handle these kinds of affairs. Deals are considered debts, and if you have any outstanding debts, you will not be able to leave the Underworld until it is paid, even if you have a valid ticket in your name.
